My foundational photo kit consists of the following (2.1 lbs. total):

  • Nikon D600 w/ 2 batteries (30.8 oz)

These are the items I always have with me, regardless of what I'm doing.  To this, I combine accessories to create a few basic kits, depending on my goals:

Walk-around (3.4 lbs)

This is my lightweight kit for just walking around when photography is not the major goal, but I still want to have my camera with me (travel, walks in the arboretum, family visits, etc).

This is my standard kit for day hikes or travel when photography is a major reason for going.

This is my lightweight kit for backpacking trips where photography is an important reason for going.
